Gum Contouring

This procedure is carried out to reshape a gummy smile. A gummy smile occurs when the teeth are covered by an excessive amount of gum tissue which affects their symmetry. The teeth appear too small and out of balance with the rest of the mouth.

This imbalance affects the person’s confidence and wellbeing and results in a reluctance to smile or show the teeth in general.

REASONS FOR GUM CONTOURING

A gummy smile is caused by genetics but may also occur as a result of the following:

  • Side effect of drugs used to treat high blood pressure
  • Dental conditions, e.g. gingivitis
  • Sore & bleeding gums

This condition is treated with gum contouring.

GUM CONTOURING PROCEDURE

This procedure is usually performed using a scalpel but technological developments have replaced this with special lasers. These lasers trim the excess tissue covering the front teeth and are then used to reshape the gum line.

Lasers are commonly used to seal blood vessels and prevent further bleeding.

There are a few cases where a portion of bone around the site of the teeth has to be removed due to excess gum coverage. But most procedures are straightforward affairs which do not require the removal of bone.

The appearance of the teeth can be improved with veneers or lumineers.
